Core Anti-Extension

Equipment: Miniband
Difficulty: Intermediate
Movement Pattern: Anti-Extension

The Resisted Hip Flexor Dead Bug is a dead bug progression that adds external resistance around the lower limbs, increasing the demands placed on trunk stabilization and hip flexor activation. Although the predominant pattern remains anti-extension, the added resistance creates greater extension forces acting on the lumbar spine, requiring the core musculature to maintain a neutral position throughout the movement. The resisted setup makes this variation particularly valuable because it promotes co-contraction between the abdominal musculature and hip flexors, improving lumbopelvic control and the ability to maintain trunk stiffness during lower-limb movement. For these reasons, it is commonly used in athletic development and movement-retraining programs to improve coordination, bracing mechanics and hip-trunk integration.

Coaching Cues

Keep the ribs down and maintain a neutral lumbar position. Brace the core and glutes before starting. Maintain both hips at approximately 90 degrees. Keep constant pressure against the band. Move the limbs slowly and under control. Avoid any pelvic movement during the exercise. Exhale during leg extension. Maintain full-body tension throughout the set.

Common Mistakes

Allowing the lower back to arch. Losing a neutral pelvic position. Performing the movement too quickly. Reducing band tension during the exercise. Compensating through the shoulders or neck. Failing to control breathing. Reducing range of motion because of poor trunk stability.
