Hinge Dominant

Equipment: Barbell
Difficulty: Intermediate
Movement Pattern: Hinge

The BB Hip Thrust is one of the most popular exercises for developing glute strength and muscle mass through a hip-dominant movement pattern. Its ability to accommodate substantial external loading while maintaining a stable setup makes it an effective tool for strengthening the posterior chain and maximizing hip extension performance. Research investigating muscle activation and hypertrophy adaptations suggests that the Hip Thrust is particularly effective for targeting the gluteus maximus compared with many traditional lower-body exercises. Beyond its role in hypertrophy-oriented training, the BB Hip Thrust is frequently used in athletic development programs to improve force production through hip extension, a key component of sprinting, jumping, acceleration and change-of-direction performance. For this reason, it is often programmed alongside squats, lunges and deadlift variations as part of a comprehensive lower-body strength program.

Coaching Cues

Position the upper back securely on the bench. Keep the chin slightly tucked throughout the movement. Brace the core before every repetition. Maintain stable foot pressure throughout the set. Drive through the midfoot and heel. Fully extend the hips by actively squeezing the glutes. Avoid excessive lumbar extension at lockout. Control the eccentric phase under tension.

Common Mistakes

Overextending the lower back at the top position. Driving primarily through the toes. Positioning the feet too close or too far from the body. Failing to maintain core tension. Using momentum instead of muscular control. Dropping the bar too quickly during the lowering phase. Not reaching full hip extension.
