Knee Dominant

Equipment: Dumbbell
Difficulty: Intermediate
Movement Pattern: Squat

The DB Alternated Goblet Side Lunge is a unilateral lower-body exercise designed to develop strength, stability and movement control through lateral movement in the frontal plane. Holding the dumbbell in a goblet position promotes a more upright torso and helps maintain proper technique throughout the exercise. The movement significantly challenges the quadriceps, glutes and adductors while improving the ability to produce and control force outside traditional squat and lunge patterns. For this reason, it is commonly used in athletic development and strength programs aimed at improving multidirectional performance.

Coaching Cues

Keep the dumbbell close to the chest throughout the movement. Take a wide lateral step while maintaining foot stability. Shift your body weight toward the working leg. Keep the chest up and the torso controlled. Track the knee in line with the foot. Drive through the ground to return to the starting position. Maintain tension in the non-working leg. Alternate sides while preserving movement quality.

Common Mistakes

Taking steps that are too narrow. Allowing the knee to collapse inward. Leaning excessively forward with the torso. Failing to shift weight onto the working leg. Losing core tension during the movement. Bouncing out of the bottom position. Limiting range of motion unnecessarily.
