Knee Dominant

Equipment: Barbell
Difficulty: Intermediate
Movement Pattern: Squat

The BB Alternated Back Lunge is a barbell reverse lunge variation designed to develop unilateral strength, stability and neuromuscular control. Alternating repetitions between legs requires continuous balance management and force transfer, increasing coordination demands compared to static split-stance exercises. Compared with walking lunges, the backward step generally allows greater movement control and improved management of braking forces, making the exercise particularly effective for developing lower-body strength, knee control and pelvic stability. For these reasons, it is widely used in strength training, athletic development and injury-prevention programs.

Coaching Cues

Keep the barbell stable and the torso upright. Brace the core before every repetition. Take a controlled step backward. Keep most of the load on the front leg. Track the knee in line with the foot. Maintain pelvic control throughout the movement. Drive through the front foot to return to standing. Alternate sides while maintaining consistent technique.

Common Mistakes

Losing trunk stability during the step. Taking steps that are too short or too long. Allowing the knee to collapse inward. Using momentum to return to the starting position. Losing pelvic control between repetitions. Shifting excessive weight onto the rear leg. Limiting range of motion due to poor control.
