The Dumbbell Goblet Squat is one of the most effective exercises for learning and refining the squat movement pattern. Holding the load in front of the body encourages a more upright torso position, making it easier to maintain proper mechanics and movement control throughout the exercise. Its simplicity and versatility make it an excellent tool for developing strength, coordination and movement awareness. The exercise primarily targets the quadriceps, glutes and adductors while requiring significant core engagement to stabilize the load. For these reasons, it is widely used both as a teaching progression for squat mechanics and as an accessory exercise in strength and athletic development programs.
Squat Dominant
1DB goblet squat
Keep the dumbbell close to the chest throughout the movement. Maintain full-foot pressure during the squat. Take a deep breath and brace before descending. Control the movement through both the hips and knees. Keep the chest up and the torso upright. Drive through the floor on the way up. Keep the knees tracking in line with the toes. Finish the movement without losing core tension.
Allowing the dumbbell to drift away from the body. Losing lumbar neutrality during the squat. Raising the heels at the bottom position. Allowing the knees to collapse inward. Excessive forward trunk lean. Descending too quickly without control. Limiting depth due to technical deficiencies.
