Equipment: Barbell
Difficulty: Intermediate
Movement Pattern: Squat

The Barbell Half Front Squat is a Front Squat variation performed through a partial range of motion. The reduced depth allows the use of heavier loads than a full squat, making it an effective tool for developing specific strength and maximizing force production at joint angles that are highly relevant to athletic performance. This exercise is commonly implemented during advanced strength phases, pre-competition periods and power-oriented training blocks where the goal is to maximize force output while limiting unnecessary fatigue. The front rack position also maintains significant demands on trunk stability and postural control throughout the movement.

Coaching Cues

Keep the elbows high throughout the movement. Brace the core before every repetition. Maintain an upright and stable torso. Control the descent to the prescribed depth. Keep pressure evenly distributed through the feet. Drive forcefully through the floor on the ascent. Keep the barbell balanced over the midfoot. Finish each repetition with active tension and control.

Common Mistakes

Dropping the elbows during the movement. Using inconsistent squat depth between repetitions. Selecting loads that compromise technique. Allowing excessive forward torso lean. Losing core tension during the descent. Turning the exercise into a full-depth squat unintentionally. Moving too quickly and sacrificing control.
