Lower Body Assistance

Equipment: Physioball/Swissball
Difficulty: Advanced
Movement Pattern: Knee Flexion

The PB SL Eccentric Hams Curl is an advanced physioball hamstring curl variation designed to emphasize eccentric hamstring strength. By using a bilateral-assisted concentric phase followed by a single-leg controlled eccentric phase, the exercise significantly increases the demands placed on the posterior chain while improving neuromuscular control and coordination. In addition to targeting the hamstrings, the exercise requires continuous activation of the glutes, abdominal musculature and pelvic stabilizers to maintain body alignment throughout the movement. For these reasons, it serves as an effective progression from standard physioball hamstring curls and a valuable preparation exercise for more demanding eccentric hamstring exercises such as the Nordic Hamstring Curl. Eccentric hamstring training is widely used to improve force absorption capacity and muscular resilience.

Common Mistakes

Losing pelvic control during the eccentric phase. Allowing the hips to drop during the movement. Compensating with excessive lumbar extension. Shifting load onto the non-working leg. Failing to control the physioball during extension. Performing the eccentric phase too quickly. Reducing range of motion because of poor control.
